Just 'cause
Skype gets all the coverage doesn't mean vendors have forgotten about other VoIP alternatives. Take the lovable
Google Talk, for example. Taiwan's Alpha Networks is all ready to produce a WiFi phone with Google Talk compatibility, they're just waiting to sync up with "clients' product roadmaps" -- whatever that means. The phone should also have Gmail capabilities, and Alpha is planning to develop a video phone as well. Whether that points to Google Talk-based video chat, and whether some sort of forthcoming Google Video Talk product is on one of those "clients' product roadmaps" is purely irresponsible (and entertaining) speculation on our part.

I like http://voicestick.com/ as a skype alternative. It uses SIP so you can use it with any sip wifi phone. Also they give you free incoming so it is a great deal for me.

Why does the logo look ebayish?
lakiolen @ Aug 3rd 2006 9:28PM
The Nokia 770 already can do Google Talk over wifi or bluetooth connected cell phone.

@Eddie: They are using practically the same color shades as ebay and in almost the same order. Both 4 letter words too. G should change the font face to look like their other product logos.

'Bout time. Google Talk is the best IM/talk client out there.

Does not EVERYTHING look E-bayish :)
Oh BTW I use a combo of Skype for my free out going calls and http://voicestick.com for my free incoming line, voice mail.... They gave me a $5 call out credit, seems to work as well as Skype. Like there dialer better.
Google talk is VERY clear sounding. I am interested in the WI Fi angle.

That's pretty cool... It's about time. I live in Oregon, and won't be surprosed if their new facility here starts delivering my home water or electricity!

skype will be the replacement of present telecommunications, google are getting in on the act.
Clay Shentrup @ Sep 13th 2006 10:20AM
Skype?! Replace current telecommunications? You've got to be kidding me. Skype is not a standard, it's a *company*.
The only thing that has a chance of becoming a ubiquitous replacement for telecommunications is something like SIP or (my guess) Jingle, because they are *standards*. You can have a Jabber address with one company, and I can have a Jabber address with another company, and we can both communicate, just like email.
Skype is already dead.
